Hopewell Mom Reads

Tara Walker reads to son Demetrius at the Appomattox Regional Library – Hopewell to demonstrate the important role that parents and caregivers play in building a foundation for literacy and school readiness with their young children. The Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and the Library of Virginia recently partnered on the First Connections VA Start with Families campaign, which ran from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day. Many free resources, including parenting tips and articles about how communities can support families, are available at www.smartbeginnings.org.

“First Connections VA Hopewell/Prince George and First Connections VA work closely with our regional library system, which offers wonderful summer reading programs that parents can attend with their children,” said Katie Sloan, executive director of First Connections VA Hopewell/Prince George, serving the city of Hopewell and Prince George County, and Alison Noble, executive director of First Connections VA, serving the city of Emporia and Dinwiddie, Greensville, Surry and Sussex counties.

“A parent can be a child’s first and most important teacher, as well as an enduring influence on their success in school and in life,” added Sloan and Noble. Summer storytime sessions began on June 16 at Appomattox Regional Library System.
